A tag has been placed on Glycobiology research and training center requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

some problems

[edit]

As reviewing administrator, I think the article isn't quite a speedy, since it asserts notability, but:

  1. Please see WP:COPYRIGHT for the ways to permit text from other websites to be used on WP. This affects not only the above article, but the one on Ajit Varki.
  2. Only individuals may edit WP, not labs or groups. please change to another username. Declare you conflict on interest on it
  3. It is extremely unlikely that a laboratory within a department at a university --even a joint one with three distinguished faculty--will be accepted in Wikipedia--not my decision necessarily, but a description of what happens here. What you would need is specific quoted references from 3rd party independent reliable published sources, print or online (but not blogs or press releases) that say the laboratory itself is particularly notable under that name--not merely the researchers. I'd advise you to add this very quickly, before it gets nominated for regular deletion.
  4. For the varki article, please rewrite so it sounds less like a press release, and more like an encyclopedia article. All claims that he is the leading [whatever] need a specific references to a 3rd party source--otherwise omit the adjectives. List only the 4 or 5 most cited references. Give the number of citations. List his book once in the article, not 3 or 4 times.
  5. I am prepared to help you with this as needed--I am a biologist and quite aware of his importance. DGG (talk) 23:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Glycobiology research and training center

Ajit Varki

[edit]
  1. See WP:COPYRIGHT for the only ways to let us use material from his website. There must be a formal release under GFDL, which permits anyone, not just WP, to use the material for any purpose at all, even commercial, and modify it any way at all.
  2. In any case, much of the material is promotional. See our Business FAQ (which also applies to non-profit organisations and people) for an explanation.

Depending on whether the release is forthcoming--if it is, list the OTRS number on the article talk page, or tell us to check for the release on the web site-- I will either rewrite the article as a brief original stub, or just remove the material that is not encyclopedic.
